Online Gigs in the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic
As musicians, speakers, comedians, and other performing artists have had their gigs cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been increasing interest in live streaming as a way to continue engaging audiences and fans.
There are several robust technologies available for today's live streaming artists. The challenge is to decide which option is best for you and your audience.
Here are some tips to help you navigate the options available today.
Ticketed vs. Free Events
Deciding if your event will be a free promotional event or a pay-per-view show will help you decide which platform might be best for you.
Popular free services like Facebook Live and YouTube Live are great for broad reach and promotion, but they have limited functions for ticketed event infrastructure. One way around this might be to create a paid Facebook group and only live stream to members of that group. Or have a private YouTube Live link that you send to people that have made a payment on your website or Patreon account.
Video conferencing services like Zoom or GoToMeeting have the capacity to host a variety of meetings and include video conferencing options for all or some attendees. This can work well, but you still need to have a separate payment option setup on your site or another third party service.
Custom service providers like Gigee can help you set up live streaming infrastructure on your own website. The advantage is that you get to control the full experience for your audience - from checkout to curtains. The downside is that it might take a little bit of time to setup and test your new streaming infrastructure to make sure it works perfectly the way you want it to.
All-in-one event hosting services like Crowdcast or StageIt offer a ready-made platform designed to host your live event and process tickets. Each platform will have different features available, so be sure to assess each of the options before setting up your online gig.
What Do We Recommend?
If you've never live streamed, or you're not quite sure how it all works, do some free testing with friends using Facebook Live or YouTube. This will help you get ready for a more "official" ticketed event.
If you're ready to setup and promote your online show, check out Crowdcast.io with their complete set of features for your ticketed live streaming event. Crowdcast even allows you to connect your Patreon account for more payment options. And they have a video conferencing option that you can use for increased audience participation in your event.
And if you want to explore the custom options for how you can set up a live streaming event system on your own website, schedule a consultation with James Wasem, the co-founder of Gigee, to discuss the technical details.

James has been "making things work" from an early age. With over 20 years of live sound, engineering & contracting, and performance experience, James has constantly been involved in the business of making things work - on the stage, in the office, and on-location. Though involved in highly technical fields, James has a passion for making things simple to understand and easy to use. And one day he hopes to play the hurdy-gurdy.

Craig McNinch is the coding genius and resident miracle worker behind the scenes at Gigee.me. He has an uncanny ability to analyze and design simple solutions for complex technical problems.
Craig purchased his first technical challenge (a Commodore PET) in middle school and quickly migrated to the realm of IT systems administration, web design and coding, and data management solutions for global enterprises. If you don’t find Craig behind his computer (no longer the Commodore, thankfully), you’ll likely find him taking pictures from a mountain trail or spelunking in the dark recesses of a cave.
